Maya McGlynn is an designer, educator, and artist based in the East Village. She earned her M.Arch degree from the Parsons School of Design where her practice focused on researching possibilities for empathetic architecture in the design world, specifically researching how the material makeup of interior spaces affects its inhabitants. Maya is now teaching architecture at Parsons School of Design and at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, as well as building artist models for Hauser & Wirth through her small scale design build practice.
Her work takes precedence from understanding and analyzing the special, and sometimes forgotten moments of a site as starting points for each of her designs, and prioritizes working with found and natural “residual” materials, often leftovers or pieces of something from the past.
Maya searches deeper into her observations by guiding her designs through multiple methods of processing such as digital scanning and collaging, and experimenting with material composition and technique, adjusting each piece until it feels just-right.
